What is transage?
Transage means a person's age identity is different than their chronological age or chrono age.
Transage people can be any age and are not all younger than their chrono age. Transage people may also fluctuate between ages, be multiple ages or be no specific age.
Common experiences related to being transage include plurality, neurodivergence, trauma, age regression and age dysphoria. Not all transage people experience all or any of these specific things. The only requirement to be transage is to feel a sincere incongruence between your age identity and your chronological age.
What is transage NOT?
Transage is NOT a term used to justify the abuse of children. The term has never been used this way by real transage people.
In 2017, transphobic trolls from 4chan used the term in this way; however, these trolls were not real transage people, nor were they even real minor-attracted people (maps). Their only intention was to harass the LGBT+ community. Snopes published a thorough debunking of the event weeks after it began.
Who coined the term transage?
The term transage was coined online by Teagreen on Urban Dictionary in May 2008.
Another notable early use of the term was by LGBT+ activist Randy Wicker, who published the term on Blogger between August 2008 and December 2009.
A common misconception is that the term was coined by maps; however, this is simply not true. No real maps even used the term transage until around 2019, and maps have never been the predominant population to use the term.
Can transage kids date chrono kids?
Absolutely not! Transage children and chrono children cannot safely have romantic or sexual relations with each other. The term transage has never been used by real transage people to justify this behaviour.
Although transage children are often of the same mental development as chrono children, transage children have learnt and experienced many more things, and this would create an unsafe power dynamic in romantic or sexual relationships between them.
Not all transage children even believe they are capable of consenting to romantic or sexual activity either. Many transage children believe it would only be safe for them in a relationship with another transage child. Some believe they would be safe with a chrono adult in a caregiver–little relationship, some believe they would be safe in any relationship with a chrono adult, and some believe it would be unsafe for them to have romantic or sexual relations with anyone.
Why not another term?
Since the term transage became so stigmatised, many transage people have attempted to use different terms to describe their experience, such as age dysphoric, altage, chronosian, ever-age / everchild, ngu (never grew up), perma-regressed and more. As well, many simply don't identify with a specific term and just try to describe their experience of being an age different than their chrono age.
However, many believe that transage is the most accurate term and still use it.
What's the history of the flag?
The transage flag was created by a group of transage people on Twitter and published in 2020 by Antifaperix on DeviantArt. Since the flag's creation, it has been widely used by transage people as a representation of transage identities.
- Orange — represents age that is older than one's chrono age.
- Yellow — represents non-traditional ages, such as multiple ages or no age.
- White — represents opposition to political oppression, which includes destigmatising and reclaming transage identities.
- Pink — represents age that is younger than one's chrono age.
- Purple — represents age that is fluid.
